James Sanders was born in Nansemond, Virginia. He built his estate in North Carolina and named it Sanders Grove where he died and is buried. From here began the family of Sanders so prevalent in North Carolina today as the legacy of the Sanders Grove Plantation passed down thrugh James' and Anne's sons John Sanders I, Hardy Sanders, and Brittain Sanders.
James Sanders I (also often spelled Saunders ) was the first Sanders to migrate from the original Sanders home in Nansemond County, Isle of Wight, Virginia. James left Nansemond Co. Va. migrating to Johnston County settling there around 1764 according to recorded deeds. He was born in 1713 in Va. and is the son of Richard Sanders and Sarah Howard also of Nansemond and he is the grandson of John Sanders I of Nansemond Va. John Sanders I patented 1600 acres of land along with 2 other men ( Jonathon Robinson and Richard Thomas ) in 1681. John Sanders I was married to Phoebe Thomas and he was the first Sanders ( Saunders ) to immigrate to America, the New World, from England, and was living along the James River on the western Nansemond River. John I was born around 1630 and died after 1681. John received a 1/3 portion of an original recorded 1600 acre Land Grant in 1681 “ for the transport of 33 persons ..” Patents 7, p 72.
*John Sanders I and Phoebe Thomas had: William, John Jr. ( m. Sarah Davis and gr/d of Capt. James Davis ), Richard ( m, Sarah Howard sister of Steven and James Howard ), and possibly a son Francis( not as well documented).
*Richard and Sarah ( Howard ) had: James I who m, Ann Holmes in 1732.
*James married Ann Holmes ( daughter of John Holmes and Tamar Byrd also of va.
James and Ann had: John I b.1731 in Bertie Co. NC ( m. Mary Tully of Johnston Co. NC ) d. 16Dec, 1783 in Johnston Co. NC, Rev War Soldier Amer Rev Military a d planter.. James and Anne had: John, Hardy, James II , and Brittain.
