"James Sellar, born Keith, 20th Feb. 1812, son of Thomas S., shoemaker, and Rachel Robertson ; educated at Keith Academy and King's College, Aberdeen M.A. (March 1837), and St Andrews Univ. ; schoolmaster of St Andrews -Lhanbryd, 1838-43; licen. by Presb. of Elgin 14th Sept. 1842 ; pres. by the Presb. jure devoluto (after a leet and vote by the congregation) 20th June, and ord. 21st July 1843; D.D. (King's College, 13th July 1858) ; elected Moderator of the General Assembly 20th May 1875 ; died 10th Aug. 1886. He marr. 27th Nov. 1878, Eliza Johnston (died s.p. at Edinburgh, 18th Nov. 1910), daugh. of Thomas Watson, min. of Covington and Thankerton [Thomas W.'s (c/. Vol. I., 249) grandson, the Right Hon. William Watson, K.C., M.P., advocate, was Procurator of the Church of Scotland (1918), Solicitor - General for Scotland (1922), Lord Advocate (1924)]."
