James Skaggs and his wife Nancy Hale Skaggs, were a part of Missouri history in that he was one of the first settlers in Center Township, Vernon County, near Nevada, coming there August 10, 1841, along with Luke Hale, James' fatherinlaw.
Before James arrival, in the fall of 1840, John Hale, brother of James Skaggs' wife, Nancy Hale Skaggs, and Jesse Anderson, who would come to marry Nancy Hale Skagg's sister, Sarah Hale, had already arrived and settled here.
Nancy Hale Skaggs, widow of James Skaggs, stated that her husband settled a quarter of a mile southwest of the public square in Nevada, Missouri, and that Luke Hale located a mile and a half northwest of the Skaggs home. The Hale family came originally from Bledsoe County, Tennessee. Luke Hale died in the fall of 1853 and was buried in the old graveyard, northwest of Nevada, Missouri. Anderson died at Luke Hale's property, abt. 1844; John Hale died in Kansas, and James Skaggs died in Moundville Township in February, 1871.
James and Nancy Hale Skaggs had 2 sons, James Wesley Skaggs and Luke Headley Skaggs. If there were other children born to them, no information is available at this time. Nancy and son Luke are buried in Worsley Cemetery, James and son John Wesley are buried in McMullin Cemetery, both cemeteries are located in Bronaugh, Vernon County, Missouri.
