About James Alma Vance
GEDCOM Note
My James A. Vance in West Feliciano Parish in the 1850 census and on page 1027 of the Slave schedule. By 1860 he has moved to East Baton Rouge Parish... J.A. Vance's first wife's father (Ellis Gore) was a slave trader (see specific note). Mr. Vance was in business in Baton Rouge with a Nicholas Wax, a prominent and wealthy citizen of Baton Rouge. 1870 census has the family in East Baton Rouge with six year old John Culberson Taylor Jr. and two year old Mary "D" (Day), ie., Molly Day Vance. James A. is listed as a farmer.
The following would be the perfect ancestry except for the fact that there is a picture on the internet of James Vance and brother Isaac Vance together in Utah in old age. More confusion in that this internet James A is born 1826 the same year as his sister and she is said to have been born in TN whereas the internet James was born in Illinois?? despite all of the circumstancial evidence and the rare incongruity there are at least a dozen DNA hits to the Vance-Perkins line and their ancestors!!
His daughter is Alma Perkins Vance. Alma comes from his father John Alma Vance and the Perkins from his mother Mormons hoping to head to Utah, the Vance family moved from TN to IL in the 1830s and Sara Lavinia died in 1836 in TN before they left. Did 19 yo James Alma leave the group as it traveled north and travel south to LA? It would make sense. Illinois was the family destination and all he had to do was turn left and catch a boat headed South? His father remarried in 1837 within a year of his first wife's death. and this would have been the perfect time and excuse to leave. .....He certainly had plenty of time, not marrying Martha Gore until 1841......however most all is speculation.
