James Whitelaw was born on 2 September 1871 in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

On 12 July 1900, James Whitelaw, a coal miner, became the husband of Jane Campbell Semple (1872-1953) in Swinhill, Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland. He became the father of John Whitelaw (1901-1962).

On 31 March 1951, James Whitelaw, age 79, died in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Burial location is unverified, although could be in Stonehouse Cemetery or cremated.
