About James de Lancey
(not to be confused with his half-brother James)
James, on the 19th of August 1771 married Margaret, daughter of Chief Justice Allen of Pennsylvania. Five children of this marriage survived him: Charles Stephen, who served in the Royal Navy; Margaret, who wed Sir Jukes Granville Clifton, Bart.; Ann and Susan, who never married, and James, Lieutenant-Colonel in the First Dragoon Guard.
In wikipedia we read: 'There are speculations with supporting evidence of tombstone inscriptions that De Lancey had a previous union with a connection of the Livingston family. Only her Christian name, Mary, is known. She died in 1770 leaving three children—John, James, and Mary. Through funds; believed to have been indirectly provided by the latter from his London exile, these children were reared and educated. '
~• Curator note: If Mary, dau. of Mary "Livingston" and Captain James De Lancey was indeed 77 years old when she died (grave stone inscription), then her mother did not die in 1770 and he father was a bigamist. The Mary Harris stone reads: "Mary, wife of Capt John Harris. Died Nov 29 1853, aged 77 yrs. ".. so she was born in 1776.
