Son of Jacob Abrahamse Vosburgh and Dorthea Janse Van Alstyne of Kinderhook, Col. New York. Jan married Cornelia Knickerbocker around 1715. They had 5 known children: Jacob Vosburgh (1716-?), Catherine Vosburgh Heermance ( ), Dorothea Vosburgh, Evert Vosburgh and Marte (Martin) Vosburgh

In 1723 he lived in Dutchess County and was taxed eleven pounds and eleven pence (Smith's History of Rhinebeck, N. F, p. 45). On 17 Oct., 1724, Jan and Cornelia Vosburgh became members of the church at Linlithgo, N. Y.; on 7 Sept., 1753, they joined the Dutch Reformed Church of the Flatts, near Nether Rhinebeck, N. Y., and on 5 Oct., 1766, were received into the membership of the Dutch Reformed Church at Red Hook, N. Y.

In 1732 Jan Vosburgh was a supervisor in Kipsbergen, Dutchess County (Smith's History of Rhinebeck, N. F, p. 47). In 1755 John Vosburgh of the Precinct of Rhinebeck owned three slaves. John Vosburgh was buried far behind St. Paul's Church Cemetery in Tivoli, on a sand bluff over looking the Hudson River, with Hannah Ashley Vosburgh (His daughter in law, first wife of Martin Vosburgh) Both Graves have long disintegrated but were documented in "Inscriptions from five New York, Dutchess Co., cemeteries" by Frost, Josephine C.
