"After the death of Capt. Handy, his widow -- not yet fifty years of age -- was married, the third time, to Capt. Thomas Gilliss, now quite advanced in years and entirely blind. It proved to be a very injudicious and unpleasant match--so much so, that Capt. George Handy was obliged to remove his father-in-law, Capt. Gilliss, to his own house. This experience of the venerable man caused him facetiously to say: 'The first time a man marries, he knows what! The second he knows what's what! -- but the third time the Devil knows what!' Tradition has sacredly preserved this remark, and to this day it is repeated in many a family circle on the Eastern Shore."
