About Jane Hall

Origins

Retrieved from http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=halldb&id... on 8/4/2008

Jane was the dau. of Thomas and Phebe (Lovell) Bumpus. Her grandfather, Edward Bumpas, came to America in the "Fortune" and arrived in Plymouth on 10 Nov. 1621. The Fortune was the next ship to arrive after the Mayflower. The name Bumpas is probably from the French Bon-pas, similar to the English Goodspeed.

Edward moved to Duxbury in 1628. In 1648, he was of Marshfield, and at about this time he married Hannah (Unknown). The record says "Hannah, widow of Edward Bumpas died Feb. 12, 1693, and Edward died 9 days before." Since he came to America in 1621 and was probably around 20 at the time, he was probably about 90 when he died. In the text Saints and Strangers, Edward is mentioned as one of the "Saints." He was a native Leydener.

Thomas Bumpas, Jane's father, was probably the youngest son of Edward, the Pilgrim. He was born about 1660 and married Phebe, the eldest daughter of John Lovell of Barnstable. Their second child was Jean, or Jane. Respecting Jane, under the date of 5 July 1696 is the following entry: "Jane d. of Phebe, wife of Thomas Bumpas, ye girl being abou 14 or 15 yrs. old, was examined, and being one of the family and looked upon in her minority was baptised." All of the Bumpas family were church members.
