About Jane Morrison Jordan

The Shreveport Times. Tuesday, January 24, 1882 Page 4

MRS. JANE M. JORDAN - It is our painful duty to record the death of Mrs. Jane M. Jordan, wife of the late E. H. Jordan, which sad event occurred Sunday morning at half-past four o'clock. Her death was not a sudden or unexpected event. She had been seriously ill for some time, and those who lovingly watched by her knew that it was a question of only a very short time when the gentle spirit would leave its tabernacle of clay and take its flight for the realms of light where sorrow and suffering never come.

Born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in May 1816, deceased would have been 66 years of age had she lived a few months longer. She was the widow of the late E. H. Jordan, who was for a number of years a highly esteemed and prosperous merchant of this city. The family removed to Shreveport in 1845 and made it their home continuously to the time of the respective deaths. They had several children but only two reached years of maturity. The daughter, Amelia, first married Col. Leon D. Marks, and some years after his death, from a wound received at the seige of Vicksburg, married Mr. Lytt Lyon, and with her young son was lost by the burning, about fourteen years ago, of the steamer Mittie Stephens in Ferry Lake - the most frightful disaster that ever occurred in this section. The son, James H. Jordan, is now a resident of this city. The maiden name of the deceased was Boggs. She was a sister of Mrs. John Walters and Miss Julia Boggs, now a resident here, and had three brothers whom we personally knew and all of whom are now dead.

Words fail us in endeavoring to speak befittingly of the estimable lady whose remains were yesterday followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives and friends and deposited by the side of those of her idolized daughter. She possessed, in the highest degree, all the attributes that go to make a perfect christian woman. As daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend, she was unvaryingly loving, gentle and self-sacrificing. Her heart was so large that it embraced all mankind; and during the many years that we knew her we never heard a harsh or unkind word pass her lips. From the errors of her fellow beings she turned her face aside and in all gentleness spread over them the shining mantle of charity. It would not be exaggerated panegyric to say that whoever knew her well without loving and esteeming her must themselves had had some mental or moral defect.

She died, as she had lived, in the steadfast hope of a blessed mortality beyond the grave - of being reunited in the regions of the blest with the many loved ones who awaited her coming.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 23 2020, 23:42:20 UTC
