CALN: 929.273 Ed98 JSMB US/CAN (Salt Lake City: Published for the Rufus Edwards Family. 1978), Also on microfilm #1036341 Item 29 When Caleb Gibbons Edwards was born, the 18th of June 1819, in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio, his parents, Rufus and Letitia Windsor Edwards had, through hard work and ingenuity, a good farm, and they made an adequate living for the family. They're still existed a pioneering spirit, from the time his father, as a single man had come into the wilderness Western Reserve. Rufus had worked as a surveyor and was allotted land from David Ladd by a written contract for 1 dollar per acre, in 1799 the dire tribulation and deprivation no longer were present that his parents first experienced. Caleb Gibbons was born in the ninth child in his family. He was named after a brother Caleb, who died two years earlier, 1817, at age seven.It was not unusual to name the following child after one who had just expired. Caleb had four brothers and four sisters. The U.S. Census enumerators counted his family in Mantua Township the following year (1820). It listed Rufus, over age 45 as the head of the household. There were two male children, under 10 years: Caleb Gibbons, in his first year; and Rufus Jr. age 8 yr.. Two male children between 10 and 16; Elisha, 14 years old and Erwin, 15 1/2 years old. Two female children under age 10; Samantha three years old and Asenth age five years. Two female children between age 10 and 16; Mariah 11 years and Emeline age ? and one female between 26 years adn 45 years: Letitia Windsor Edwards, his wife. Caleb is in the Nauvoo Temple records as being endowed and sealed, married thursday, 5th of February, 1846 to Cynthia Shepard who was born in Elizabethtown, Leeds, Ontario, Canada, daughter of George Shepard and Jane Whitley. .
