About Janet Blaw

JANET BLAW (aka JONAT BLAW)

Spurious Pedigree

It has been erroneously claimed, in a number of pedigrees published on the internet, that Jonat Blaw, here treated, the wife of David Primrose in Culross is the same person as Jonat Blaw who was the daughter of James Blaw of Castlehill, younger and his wife Christine Schorthous (aka Christian Blaw or Schortes), although one pedigree published by Myheritage claims that her husband was Henry Primrose rather than David Primrose. Two of these pedigrees claim that Janet Blaw was born in 1494 and died in 1576. Another two claim birth dates of 1523 or 1525 and say that she died in 1574. MyHeritage This is quite impossible, however. The daughter of James Blaw of Castlehill was born before 28 January 1587-8 and cannot, therefore, be the same person as the Jonat Blaw treated here. The ancestry of Janet Blaw has not been identified. However, according to Christopher N. Johnston: "It seems more likely that Jonet Blaw, who married David Primprose, was a daughter of Alexander Blaw, or John or Gilbert, of the 1516 deeds [See Below]." John Blaw of Castlehill Jacobite and Criminal: 123

Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

27 March 1516: Notarial instrument narrating that John Blaw and Alexander Blaw bound themselves in forma compromissi et in forma speculatoris before the death of their father, Robert Blaw, then lying on his sick-bed, and with his counsel and blessing to observe and fulfil the decreet to be given by Robert Cristeson [Christison] and James Pattersoun [Paterson], for the said John, and Thomas Sands and Gilbert Blaw, for the said Alexander, as arbiters and amicable compositors, concerning the division of certain arable lands called the Breulandis [Brewlands] and Saltoun Croft on the north side of the town of Culross and certain houses and yards with their pertinents in the said town, which belonged to the said Robert heritably, and also concerning certain conditions, bonds and permissions of certain lands made by the said Robert to the said Alexander, as he alleged. The arbiters having met and accepted the reference, delivered their decreet (in Scots), dated at Culross 26 March 1516 regarding the division of the lands which pertained to "umquhill Rob Blaw and Quony Brady his spouse", either party having allowed the other to choose, (the decreet then specifies and describes the properties involved); "item anent the feild land we haif castyn cawills for soun and schadok, and Johne has fallyn the soun quharever the landis ly in ony part, therefor Johnne sal begyn at the soun and tak ane ryge and therefter Alexander tak ane other rege and sua proceid all throw"; the "unland" is to be divided in the same manner but each is to "tak that lyis fornent his awn rege". Decreet signed by arbiters with their hands "at the pen". Moreover the said Alexander Blaw renounced the conditions etc. made by his father. Upon all which John Blaw asked instrument. Witnesses: John Stevynson [Stevenson], John Rouch [Rough], William Hevynson and Malcolm Salter. Notary: Robert Broun [Brown], St. Andrews diocese.
