About Janez Obradovič

ACCIDENT NO. 12 - January 23, 1913 — John Bradovitch, No. 8, C. & H. Mine. John Bradovitch, an Austrian, employed as trammer by said company, met his death on this day by a fall of vein rock.

At the inquest held over his body before Justice Fisher, it was made known that he had suffered the fracture of both arms, of one leg, three scalp wounds, and had lived two hours after injury. The following testimony was given:

John Dragenich: “I work at No. 8 shaft, south side, as trammer, was partner to deceased. Accident happened at the 39th level, No. 8 shaft, south side, at about 3:00 o'clock this morning. I was standing closely in front of the car and Bradovitch was standing behind when hanging fell down. The “five - dollar boss” had pinched the ground about 9:00 o'clock the evening before. The ground that fell was on the other side from where he had pinched; the rock that fell was vein rock from the hanging. He spoke of danger there, too. I told the miners on the north side that loose ground was there. I asked John Leary to pinch the ground down and make it safer. That was after the five - dollar boss had been pinching it. Leary works on the north side. I don't know if the north side miners have orders to pinch down ground for the south side trammers."

John Matela: “I am five - dollar boss for C. & H. Mining Company. I was working in the same shaft, was in the same place about 9:30 the evening before; there were two pieces of timber holding the ground up. I barred down that place but it looked all right. I struck it with the bar; it was not very bad. I was not there when accident happened. I go from the 59th to 61st level; the shift boss at the time was at the 48th or 49th level. The ground that fell came from the top, right above the car, about 5 feet from the rail."

Verdict: "We, the jury, find that the said John Bradovitch was struck by a fall of vein rock on Thursday, the 23d day of January, 1913, at the 59th level, south side of No. 8 shaft, C. & H. Mine, receiving injuries which caused his death about two hours later."
