About Jean Baptiste Martin dit St. Jean

Jean Martin, aka. Jean-Baptiste Martin dit St. Jean, was born in St. Genard near, Melle...southeast of Niort. He was Baptised the day after his birth 31/3/1696 in St. Genard. He was recruited as a soldier, in the Compagnies Franches De La Marineand arrived. In Canada, approx. 1719. Upon enlisting he adopted what is called a war name as many soldiers did; St. Jean. The reason why he chose St. Jean, or why it may have been assigned to him is unknown. He also added Baptiste to his name, later in life. He was posted at Fort Senneville, now St. Anne De Bellevue, Montreal, Canada. He was given land in Vaudreuil, and Les Cedres.qc. Canada presumably for his service. He married Marie Therese Henault dit Canada ( Enaud) in Montreal, Qc, Canada in 1723. ( Let it be known he was awarded 2 plots of land in Vaudreuil, one of which he sold to his Sister in Law)
