About Jeanne-Thérèse Therese Catin

Oh, this is rich! What strange paths language follows. According to an old French of France dictionary, the word "catin" is slang to refer to a woman of loose morals, but...

ÉTYMOLOGIE (Word Origin)

Abréviation populaire de Catherine, Catharina, nom propre qui dérive du grec, pur. It is a common abbreviation for Catherine, a proper name that derives from the Greek, and means _pure_, without any corruption! Another meaning cited is the following:

3. Dans plusieurs provinces, nom que les petites filles donnent à leurs poupées.

In many provinces, the name little girls give to their dolls.

As I was growing up, a catin was a doll, that's all, in the FC language of my parents. A U.S. historian writing about the sister of your ancestor, Janice Fouchia Lekich, tried to smear Thérèse Catin's reputation by referring to her with the slang meaning of "catin", her birth last name. I was disgusted by his totally biased slant. Joseph L. Peyser treats her unfairly, as I see it, also calling her a “contentious butcher’s daughter.” Much of Peyser’s language is similarly “loaded” and biased. “The Fall and Rise of Thérèse Catin: A Portrait from Indiana’s French and Canadian History,” Indiana Magazine of History, XCI (December, 1995), pp. 361-377. Thérèse Catin become the first woman to negotiate business in what became the state of Indiana when she entered into an association with Philippe Damours de La Morandière on 11 June 1735 for trade at the Miami post (now Fort Wayne, Indiana),

Source: Facebook Group, French Canadian Descendants,August 12, 2016, Suzanne Sommerville commented on a post about the name for a doll in French Canadian. Some said Poupee and some said catin was the French Canadian name for a doll but it is also the slang name for woman of ill repute.
