About Jeannette Stein

The first to start the wine business in Amsterdam was Levi Stein (who was also a rabbi). Levi Stein was born in 1934 in Nagyvárad, Hungary (now Oradea, Romania) and was the son of Markusz Stein and Szali Michelstadter. Levi married on June 15, 1858 in Erdöbenye, Hungary with Ernestine (Eszter) Habermann.
Eszter Habermann was born in 1837 in Erdöbenye and was the daughter of Isak (Izidor) Habermann and Hani Goldhammer (Hani Goldhammer was my 4th great-grandaunt).
Isak and Hani had large vineyards in Erdöbenye and that is what motivated Levi Stein's business in Amsterdam. Levi had learned a lot from his father-in-law Isak about the knowledge of wine. When Isak died, his daughter Eszter (Levi Stein's wife) inherited quite a few vineyards.
Knowledge and family relationships allowed Levi Stein to acquire the best products and the business flourished more and more.
The first location of the business was at number 13 of Oude Waal Street and the name was Ern. Stein Wijnhandel. The name was in reference to Levi's wife, Ernestine (Eszter).
Levi Stein was also a popular rabbi. He preached at the synagogue at Sint Antoniesbreestraat 36 (which was demolished after World War II) and was also a guest speaker elsewhere.
Despite the success of his business, for Levi Stein and his wife Eszter Habermann, the most important thing was the well-being and development of their children. Therefore, they decided to move to Berlin and transferred their business to Jozsef Sten, one of his brothers. Josef Stein was born in Nagyvárad, Hungary (now Oradea, Romania), on June 30, 1839 and married in March 1963 in Ungvár, Hungary, (now Uzhhorod, Zakarpats'ka, Ukraine) with Mali (Amalia) Reisman .
With Jozsef Stein at the helm, the business continued to thrive and continued to focus on selling Kosher wines.
In 1886 the business moved from Rapenburgerstraat 132 to Rapenburgerstraat 126
Mali Reisman, Joszef's wife died on July 6, 1881 in Amsterdam. Mali and Joszef had five children, all born in Ungvár, Hungary, (now Uzhhorod, Zakarpats'ka, Ukraine): Marton (later renamed Maximilian), Hani Sara, Frida, Hani Mirel, and Aron.
Shortly after Mali Reisman's death, Josef remarried on September 20, 1882 in Amsterdam to Jeannete de Haas. Jeanette was born in Wageningen on January 7, 1948. With Jeanette, Josef had four children: Hendrika, Samuel, Mozes (Morris) and Betje.
Josef died in Amsterdam on December 11, 1905 and his wife Jeannette then carried on the business under the name of Wed. J. Stein (Weduwe J. Stein) with the help of her children until the business went bankrupt in February 1928.
Stein's wine was so famous that there was even a song about it.
