About Jeannie Whittemore Sumner
The daughter of Elmira Whittemore and Henry Hill Elliott, Jeannie married William Graham Sumner on April 17, 1871 when he was rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Morristown, New Jersey. A year later they moved to New Haven when he became a professor in the political and social science department at Yale, a position he held until 1909, a year before his death. They had two sons, Eliot, born in 1873 and Graham, born in 1877.
