Since the Bronze Age when whalebones were used in dwelling places, the Scots have hunted whales. The commercial whaling industry is thought to have started in the twelfth century by the Basques, who hunted the Northern Right Whale in the Bay of Biscay. The British later discovered the Right and Humpback whales in the Arctic seas and recruited Basques whalers on board to assist them 1561 Mary, Queen of Scots returned to Scotland from France and landed at Leith. 1616 James VI granted a 35 year patent to two Leith skippers to hunt for whales to Newfoundland . after the Act of Union in 1707

The British Government introduced the Bounty Act in 1749,- offering 40 shillings per ton on all ships that were fitted out in this country that were 200 tons or more. The Act of 1749 gave rise to new developments for the use of the whale oil, utilising it mainly for lighting purposes. 1750  The Edinburgh Whaling Company was established , and vessels from all over Scotland would converge on Leith Roads in the Firth of Forth before heading in convoy to the whaling grounds.  In 1751 Six whalers, with an approximate capacity of 330 tons set sail from Scotland and by 1756 this had increased to sixteen & 1756 Whaling:  Edinburgh Whale Fishing Company established. the last recorded catch noted in 1836.  The beginning of the 1800's saw a dramatic increase in the number of whaling ports, in order to support the demand for the whale products.     1842 Whaling ceased in Leith. David Melvin was born in 1735. He married Jean Balantine on 18 Nov 1751 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland.  Daughter Jennett Melvin     born2 May 1755 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
