JENS MADLAND

In this village on Saturday, evening, November 29th, Jens Madland, in the 81st year of his age.

Mr. Madland was born in Stavanger, Norway, where he attained considerable distinction, and at one time represented his district in the legislature. He was well educated, and a great reader, devoting his time very largely to general history.

He came to this country in 1859, and removed to Sauk Centre thirteen years ago. He was the father of twelve children, six of whom survive him, and five residents of this state.

He took a lively interest in political affairs, casting his first vote in America for Abraham Lincoln, and he has since been an enthusiastic member of the republican party.

A devoted member of the Lutheran church, he has given liberally of his time and means in building up the cause of his Master, and died in confidence of a triumphant life beyond.

His death, while not unexpected, was keenly felt among a large circle of friends, the blow falling with special force upon his aged wife, who has the sympathy of the entire community. He has not been a great sufferer, but faded away, stricken in the years. Having exceeded the fullest extent allotted to this earthly pilgrimage. He was buried on Monday, Rev. O. P. Ogan officiating.

DIED

MADLAND—In this city at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Andrew Nelson, on Monday, August 28th, Mrs. Guner Madland, aged eighty-three yeas and seven months.

Mrs. Madland was probably the most advanced in age of all the residents of this city, and retained her faculties in a wonderful degree until the very last. Upon the day preceding her death she held a pleasant and animated conversation with her son John, who came down from Ashby to see her, and who remained until after her burial on Tuesday. She was a remarkably bright and amiable person, and was universally esteemed and respected for her Christian virtues. For nine years she has been a widow. She was born and married in Norway, coming to this country in 1859, when she settled with her family in Fillmore county, removing to Sauk Centre in 1871. She was the mother of twelve children, six of whom are surviving, and three of them, Marcus, John and Mrs. Nelson, well-known here. During the past year, she has been practically helpless, but all that a loving heart and tender hands could do her for comfort and happiness has been done by her daughter, with whom she made her home and family, and in her last days she has been tenderly cared for.

Notes for Theodore Jensen Madland: Theodore was a bachelor and died in his thirites after a long seige of tuberculosis. As he grew weaker he took a ring from his finger and gave it to his mother saying, "I won't need it much longer." He died and was buried in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He had been very well liked in his life and was "refined," in the terminology of his generation.

Could Theodore be buried here? Since he died in 1872, he would possibly have been moved from Greenvale.

Theodore Jensen Madland (son of Jens Tormodsen Madland and Gonner Thomadsdatter) was born 25 Nov 1840 in Norway, and died 08 Apr 1872 in Sauk Centre, Stearns, MN.

Jens, when he was 21, inherited his father's house and blacksmith shop in Stavanger at the time Tormud left for America on The Sloop. He married, had 12 children, and became the proprietor of a brass foundry. However, he was an obliging, good-natured man and often signed notes for friends or went bond for someone and when they failed, his own property was seized by the creditors. In fact, the latter became so voracious, they even threatened to take the flour the Madlands had for baking. This evoked Gonner's classic protest: "You'd better take the baby, too, if you're going to take the flour."

Jen's oldest son, Thomas went to America prior to December 1856; and in some manner Jens collected funds to follow him in 1858 or 1859 with seven children. One of these, John, 8, almost fell overboard on the way. In spite of being bankrupt the family somehow got to the Slooper stronghold at Fox River, Illinois. From here they went to Wisconsin, where Jens worked as a blacksmith; thence to Newburg in Fillmore County, southeastern Minnesota. From here they moved to Rushford (same county), where Jens had a blacksmith shop; and finally in 1876 to Sauk Centre (Stearns County) in the west-central part of the state.

Jens Tormodsen MADLAND was born in 1804 in Madland, Gjesdal, Stavanger Amt (Rogaland), Norway. He died in 1885 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He was buried in Lot 71, Oakland Cemetery, MN. IMMIGRANT Remained in Norway when parents and 3 youngest sisters sailed on the Restoration. "...when he was 21, inherited his father's house and blacksmith shop in Stavanger (Norway) at the time Tormod left for America on the Sloop. When Jens as 28 he married Gonner, daughter of Thomads Marcussen of Naes in Flekkefjord*, and they acquired a family of 12 children. Meanwhile Jens prospered and became the proprietor of a brass foundry. However he was an obliging, good-natured man and often signed notes for friends or went bond for someone and when they failed, his own property was seized by the creditors. ... Jens' oldest son ... went to America prior to December 1856; and in some manner Jens collected funds to follow him in 1858 or 1859 with 7 children ... the family somehow got to the Slooper stronghold at Fox River, Illinois. From here they went to Wisconsin ... thence to southeastern Minnesota ... and finally in 1876 to Sauk Centre in the west-central part of the state.... In America Jens was a farmer as well as a blacksmith." (Slooper book) Contrary to the Slooper book, and apparently an error, the "Emigrants from Stavanger" Internet web site (http://www.hist.uib.no/arkivverket/dnuEng.htm) indicates that he emigrated with his parents in 1825. Research by Gunleif Seldal of Norway indicates that all of the Madland children left for America with their parents aboard the sloop Restoration on 4 Jul 1825. "However, when the sloop passed Tungenes outside the Byfjord the sea was rough, and some of the passengers got seasick. The master of the sloop decided then to return to Dusavik where they anchored up, awaiting the gale to subside. Tormod's three oldest children; Martha, Kristi and Jens were amongst those suffering from seasickness. They insisted to go ashore, and left the sloop the following morning. (According to family tradition) This was the last time they ever saw their parents." (Seldal communication 4 Dec 2000)
