"In 1845 . . . . Jeremiah Calkins removed with his family to Ulster County, NY, and changed his avocation to that of an extensive collier. There through the intrigue and chicanery of a man in whom he reposed the utmost confidence, he lost his entire fortune and had to begin life anew. He was a man of indomitable will, of sterling integrity, and his word was as good as his bond. Of the Methodist Episcopal Church he was a faithful member, and in order to be present at Divine worship, he would often walk for six miles to the place of meeting. He was beloved by all who knew him, and his death was deeply mourned. His wife, a native of Connecticut, was born March 12, 1818, and died December 12, 1839, during the infancy of our subject . . . .
