About Jeremiah Mitchell
6. JEREMIAH's birthplace is uncertain. Columbia Falls has no records prior to 1892 and there is no record of Jeremiah’s birth in Unity. Perhaps John Mitchell did not go directly to Unity from Columbia Falls. Tibbetts and Lamson in Early Pleasant River Families state that “he was at Columbia in 1769 and sometime after 1772 settled at Unity.” As it has been suggested that John arrived in Unity about 1782, there are several years when his whereabouts are uncertain. Jeremiah’s date of death is uncertain.
He m. 16 Sep 1802 Mary “Polly” Simmons, dau. of Libbeus and Mary (Dougle/Douglass) Simmons of Troy, b. 23 Jul 1784. Ralph Hillman who does lookups for the MaineGenWeb in the town of Troy has found mention of Libbeus in Troy records but is able to find very little information on the family. Early researchers cite a broken, illegible grave stone at the Mt. Rest Cemetery in Monroe. Both his stone and Polly’s have disappeared over the years.
In 1804 Jeremiah was one of the signers of a petition from the inhabitants of Twenty Five Mile Pond Plantation to incorporate a town to be called New Columbus. On the 22nd of June 1804 the town incorporated with the name of Unity. In 1817, Jeremiah signed a petition for incorporation of a town to be named for President Monroe.
