About Jerusha Headlee

Jerusha: Her family was of Puritan Stock, that moved form Boston to New Haven Colony and then to Elizabethtown,New Jersey.

More info:

Last record found was in 1709 in Mamaroneck. Richard was 67 at that time and probably died soon afterwards.....A sailor in the British Navy, Richard deserted and settled in New Jersey. The Navy found him again and re-impressed him, but, off the New Jersey coast, he jumped ship again and found his way back to his family. According to family tradition, Richard argued with his brother over the spelling of their surname.

John Headlee Sr. was born about 1735 and died during the Revolution. He joined the army of the Revolution, and died one month later of natural causes before being in battle. no service record has been found. He married Jerusha Mann and record says they came to New Jersey from Massachusetts, Jerusha is probably connected to the Mann family from that state. John and Jerusha lived within nine miles of Princeton, where they could hear the battle of Princeton and Trenton.

The 1800 census of Burke County North Carolina lists Thomas Headlee 16-25 years of age and a female over 45 years old, this was believed to be his mother Jerusha ( Mann) Headlee, no further records of her. Jerusha is probably buried there.Joshua M. Headlee was born about 1764 within nine miles of Princeton and Trenton New Jersey. A Revolutionary war voucher dated September 1782 of North Carolina ( Salisbury district of which Burke County was a part of ) paid Joshua Headley 19 pounds 6 shillings plus 2 pounds interest, which indicates the debt was incurred 2 years before. It is not known whether this debt was for service or goods, but likely for military services. If Joshua was born in 1764 he would have been only 16 years old at the end of this service. The 1790 census for Burke Co. North Carolina lists Joshua 15 names after his brother John, so Joshua was in the same area as John. The 1800 census lists him same place. Joshua married Susanna after 1790 in North Carolina. The 1810 census lists Joshua and Susanna and children in Greene County Pennslyvania, 1820 census same place. No 1830 census for them, apparently they were moving to Indiana. The 1840 census for Walker township Rush County Indiana lists Joshua M. age 70-79 and wife age 60-69. About 1841 Joshua M. and his son Joshua J. moved to Lee County Iowa, where Joshua M. died age 80 about 1844. It is not known what the M. and J. stood for in the names but probably added to tell the father and son apart. Headlee families only gave one name to their children at this time. The children of Susanna and Joshua M. were Elisha, Susan, Joshua J.,Thomas, Amos and Sarah. Susan is named in the Biographical History of Pottawattamie County Iowa. Sarah is listed in the history of Shelby County Indiana. Elisha moved north to Tipton County Indiana, he changed the spelling of his name to Headley, Joshua J. went with his father to Lee County Iowa then 7 years later to Pottawattamie County Iowa, his ancestors moved west.Thomas remained in Walker township Rush County Indiana, many of his ancestors are in Rush and Shelby Counties Indiana. Amos was in Shelby County in 1840 and left for parts unknown.
