About Jesse Vann
Jesse Vann was a Cherokee man
Biography
Jesse was born in 1788. He was the son of James Vann and a Cherokee woman called "Dawnee." [1] Jesse was one of the children dispossessed by James Vann in his will. The Cherokee Council voided the will and distributed property to all of James' children, including Jesse. The Council wrote, "Upon a full consideration of the Writing of James Vann deceased purporting to be a Will … annulling & setting aside said writing determining that the same is not agreeable to the rules & regulations of the said Nation and it being their wish that the property should be divided among all the children of the said James & his widow.” [2] Jesse fought in Captain Alexander Sanders company, Cherokee Volunteers in the War of 1812 and his widow received payment for his service in 1860. [3] In 1814 the Moravians wrote that Jesse wanted to enroll his half-brother, Robin, in their school. He married An-na-wa-ke (possibly Foster) about 1815. They were the parents of four children, James, Jennie, Nannie, and Sallie. [4] His death date is unknown, but he is believed to have died about 1819.
