About Jesse Vick

From Joseph Vick of Lower Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia and His Descendants, vol. I:

pp 169-170

47. JESSE4 VICK (?Joseph3, Robed, Josephl) was born in 1751 in Duplin, County, North Carolina. He died on 15 August 1836 in Wayne County, North Carolina.

On 28 July 1776, Jesse enlisted in the 10th Regiment of the North Carolina Continental Line. He served in a unit commanded by a Captain Hogg and a Colonel Shepherd. During his nine month's service, he rose to the rank o f sergeant. There are no further details o f his service. 1

Jesse married MARYIMOOLEYIMOLL Y ROBERTSON on 12 February 1778 in Johnston County.. They were married by Ambrose Raines, a Justice ofthe Peace.2 Later, when applying for a widow's pension, she gave her maiden name as Robinson and stated they were married in March, 1776, which was apparently an error.3
After the war, Jesse moved his family to Wayne County, North Carolina. However, he does not appear in census records until 1810. Then his household included a male over 45, a female 16-26, and a female over 45. 4

At no time does he appear to have owned land; indeed Jesse and his family seem to have had a hand-to-mouth existence. When, on 21 November 1821, he petitioned the court ofWayne County for a pension as compensation for his wartime service, he listed his only earthly possessions as "one bed and furniture, one chest, one pot, one Tub, one Bread Tray, one Skillet, one wheel and cards, one ax, two small weeding Hoes, two Pewter dishes, Three earthen Plates".5

According to his widow, Mary, Jesse died intestate in Wayne County on 5 August 1836. On 16 March 1842, aged 87, she applied for a widow's pension. She stated that she had been the mother ofthree children, ofwhom only one, LucretialLucy Shumell, was living. Mary was dead by 15 December 1851 when Lucretia submitted a claim for monies from the pension. 6

Daughter, probably born in Duplin County, North Carolina:

1. LUCRETIA/LUCY, b. ca. 1781; d. after 15 December 1851, probably in Wayne County, North Carolina. She m. [ ] SHUMELL. No further records.7
