Jessie Healy's story

In January 2012, Jessie Healy had a below knee amputation on her left leg, due to having had diabetes for over thirty years.

She had her rehabilitation at Waikato hospital and then at Thames for a month. With her main support person being her husband, her daughter also comes to help out and give him a rest for the weekend every now and then.

She has physio at home and is visited by the district nurse. She had her bathroom altered to help make it better for her to use and also had a ramp built outside the house for easier entry to home. Jessie also has home help to assist with cleaning and showering.

Jessie has only just got her artificial limb, so is currently using her new limb, her walker and her wheelchair to get about. At first after the amputation she found it really hard to cope physically and emotionally but now says it gets better and easier with time.

She hopes to get back to playing nine holes of golf eventually and also back into the garden.
