____________________________________________

Not much is known about Jessie Olive Hockey but we believe she was born around 1886. She is the daughter of James Temlitte Hockey and Martha Ann Hockey of Cape Province, South Africa. We know that she served as a nurse in the South African Medical Service and then became a sister in the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. World War I Nurses were members of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) and there were about 10,000 regular and reserve QAs serving in countries such as France, India, East Africa, Italy, Palestine, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Salonika and Russia.
It is believed that she arrived in Great Britain from South Africa on 27th November 1916 and later arrived in France on 29th December 1916. She was posted to No.2 General Hospital, Le Havre.
... Jessie Olive Hockey was admitted to hospital on 11th May 1917, and was diagnosed with cerebral-spinal meningitis. She was very ill for many weeks, and eventually, when her condition finally improved, she was transferred to 14 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, on the 8th August 1918, en route for England. However, she relapsed on 13th August and died the following day.
