(Henriette Birnbaum escaped extermination)
"It was thanks to the International Red Cross that Henriette Birnbaum was liberated from the Theresienstadt ghetto in February 1945 and taken to Switzerland. In a letter she wrote to Hamelin in March 1947, she said:
"One cannot understand that these criminals (= the National Socialists) had such power, but thank God that they all received their punishment.
... and let's thank Switzerland for taking care of us, that was the biggest event in my life after two and a half years imprisonment to be free again. When we reached the border (=Switzerland)... we had to remove our star and were taken over by the Red Cross and fed with tea, ... cheese, the first time we were able to eat our fill. ... Hunger, cold, illnesses ... every day the fear of coming to Poland and ending up in the gas chambers was the order of the day. Every day I thank God for the great miracle.
The worst thing was that I had to lose my beloved child (= Max). ... My boy was deported to Warsaw on April 24, 1942. I stayed in touch with him for the first 4 months. … The dear friends from Hamelin … who came to Theresienstadt all died of malnutrition, and it was too cruel to witness this misfortune.”
A few weeks after writing this letter, on July 21, 1947, Henriette Birnbaum died
