He kept an journal account of his daily life while living in Indiana when he was about 13 years old. Around January 1st, 1896 for a year. He makes account of President McKinley's assassination during his campaign.

Jewell's family raised hogs, sold timber, maple sugar, and corn. His accounts tell of the 100 hogs sold to a buyer for $3.65 a head. They were often going into the towns of Kokomo, Sharpsville, & Fairfield for business or to got to get the mail or to pay their taxes. His journal speaks of going to school or missing school, the daily weather, and his father having to go to pay his taxes. There are several names as neighbors, or friends, and family mentioned. Also going to Sunday School at the church.

Jewell often rode into town on his horse named Fred. Fred seemed to be a character as it was noted in his journal that Fred got away once, then he kicked over the sugar water and drank a few gallons.

My mother read some of his journal to me, which she has in her possession along with Jewell's brother's Bible dated April 1886

Jewell moved to Arizona in his later years due to his Asthma.
