Joachim Hendrik Maartens

Although family records give Joachim Maarten's birthplace as Middleburg,Transvaal, there are other genealogy's showing that a Joachim Hendrik Maartens (probably his father) married Louisa Maria Grobbelaar (probably his mother) from Graff Reinet in the Cape and that there was a Maartens family living in Middleburg, Eastern Cape around the time of his birth. Joachim b.1864 later married Cornelia van Wyk from Tarkastad, and lived first at Barkley East, then at Cedarville, where they had most of their family. It seems very likely that the Transvaal birthplace entry is a mistake and the family came from the Eastern Cape and migrated the comparitively short distance to East Griqualand around 1890.
