About Joanna Bromley
Joanna Vassa
Finad a Grave entry -
Birth: 1795 Death: 1857
Joanna Vassa was the only surviving child of author, Methodist and leading Anti-Slavery campaigner Olaudah Equiano - otherwise known as Gustavo Vassa the African. Her early life was very tragic. In 1796, when she was one, her mother Susannah died, and the folowing year her famous father passed away in London, aged 52. This was followed shortly by her younger sister Anna (1793-1797). She married the congregational minister, the Rev Henry Bromley, and settled at Clavering, Essex, where he was pastor from 1827 to 1845. They both moved to London, where she lived for the remainder of her life. Her tomb was discovered in 2005, and is awaiting restoration. She is buried close to the memorial statue to Issac Watts.
