Notes from http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/r/Larry-H-Barker/WEB...

Note: Thomas Blunt, Sr. in his will dated 21 Sept 1708 made his wife, Priscilla Blunt, executor of his estate, Priscilla was the second wife of Thomas Blunt and married William Thomas before 1716. Thomas Blunt, Jr. was established as executor of his father's will 20 Mar 1716. Thomas Blunt, Jr. made his will in Surry Co. 9 Feb 1718. He mentions his nieces Anne Edmunds and Jane Flood in his will, but mentions no children for Joel Barker. The fact that no children were mentioned for Joel Barker is good evidence that this was possibly a short and childless marriage. Thomas Blunt, Jr. died before 15 April 1719 when his will was probated. On 15 May 1718, in Isle of Wight Co., Thomas Blunt, Jr. made a deed to John Flood, Howell Edmunds, and Joel Barker for the land they inheired from his father's will. I believe Joel Barker's wife, who was a daughter of Thomas Blunt, Sr., died shortly after her father made his will.

Joel Barker remarried before 16 April 1711 to a daughter of Benjamin Harrison. Benjamin Harrison named Joel Barker in his will of that date giving him the land that he lives on that leyes on ye Wildcatt. On 6 May 1711, just two months after Benjamin Harrison made his will, Joel Barker & wf., Katherine, sold the 100 acres of land to William Killingsworth that Joel had bought from his brother, Jethro, in 1693 . In 1716 Joel Barker patented 170 acres Uppper Parish of Surry Co. on S. side the main Blackwater Sw; beg. at the Wild Catt Br; on the College Line. This may have been the land he received from Benjamin Harrison. In 1724 Joel patented an additional 100 acs in Surry Co. on S. side of the main Blackwater Sw., adjoining his own land, and in 1732 Joel patented another 100 acres on the south side of the Blackwater Swamp at the Wildcatt Branch adjoining the land of Thomas Edmunds.

Assuming Joel married about 1793 and his 1st wife died about 1709 he could have sired at least eight or more children over the 16 year period. However, considering the fact that he deeded to Howell Edmunds the land he inheired from Thomas Blunt might indicate that he had no children heirs to Thomas Blunts estate. His second marriage to Benjamin Harrison's daughter would have taken place between 1709 and Apr 1711. I have found no other deeds for Joel Barker, Sr. which leads to the conclusion that after selling his land he was living with one of his sons.

Joel Barker never made a Will and he never deeded any land to a son or daughter, which makes it impossible to prove a descendancy from Joel. However, I theorize that children of Joel Barker can be determined by the process of elimination.

By using deeds and wills to follow the disposition of land from one generation to the next for John and Jethro Barker I have not been able to attach Joel & wf Sarah, John & wf. Elizabeth, and William & wf. Priscilla as children of John or Jethro Barker. The fact that Joel & John Barker were listed in the Albemarle Parish Register in Sussex County adds additional prove to this theory. Also, they both lived on Pigeon Roost Creek in Brunswick County for a while. Joel migrated to Wake Co., NC where he died in 1779. Some of the children of William & Priscilla settled in Wake Co. John Barker & wf. Elizabeth left Brunswick Co. in 1791 and moved to Iredell Co., NC where he died in 1808. His son Howell named a son Joel and the names of other descendants are alike with the descendants of William Barker, who died in Orange Co., NC.

The only other Joel Barker I have found in Surry Co. records was the son of John Barker and wf Mary (Moring- Barker) Morris, who's will was probated in 1742. The following court records for Surry Co. appear to be for this Joel.
