ELDORA — Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Longenecker funeral home with burial at Miller cemetery near Union for Joe W. Bittner, 67; died Tuesday at University hospital, Iowa City; survived by wife, three sons, Dale, of Eldora; Joe and Dwayne, of Des Moines.

Son not in the above obit or the below 1940 census is Gerald, born in 1918 and died in 1920.

HARRIETT "Hattie" DELL HAMMER was born May 4, 1896, and died Aug. 24, 1990 in Iowa. On Feb. 14, 1914 in Marshall County, Iowa she married JOEL W. BITTNER, son of John and Malinda C. Jones Bittner, born June 28, 1888 and died May 15, 1956 at University Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. Harriett and Joel resided in Eldora, Iowa. Harriet’s sister LaVada married Joel’s brother Oliver Bittner.

  1. DALE BITTNER, b. Jan. 29, 1915, d. Jan. 1, 1994 Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa, m. Gretchen L. Bolich, 1920 – 1992. They are buried in East Lawn Memorial Garden, Eldora, Iowa.
  2. GERALD LEON BITTNER, b. 1918; d. Feb. 1, 1920, Had water on the brain* as a newborn. Burial: Miller Cemetery.
  3. JOEL J. BITTNER, b. March 20, 1923 Union, Hardin County, Iowa, d. July 26, 2000 Mitchellville, Polk Co., Iowa. Nickname: Bud. Married Marjorie, 1925-2002. They are buried in Mitchellville Cemetery, Mitchellville, Iowa.
  4. DUANE R. BITTNER, b. 1934; d. 1962; m. PEGGIE ESTES. Burial: Miller Cemetery, Hardin County Iowa. Ames Daily Tribune, page 16, July 30, 1962: Duane R. Bittner, 28, Des Moines, was killed Saturday night when his car crashed into a bridge abutment on Iowa 215 about three miles south of Eldora. He was alone in the car, driving to pick up his wife and family at Gifford. Bittner died only two miles from his destination, where his family was visiting.
