DEATH OF MR J MARION ESTES A Prominent Business Man and Good Citizen Passes Away.

Last night at 6 o'clock Mr J Marion Estes breathed his last at the home of his son, Mr Edwin C Estes, on third avenue.

Mr Estes had been confined to his bed with la grippe for two weeks and his condition has been such for the past few days as to cause his friends serious alarm. He received every possible attention that a devoted family, kind and loving friends and skilled physicians could render but in spite of all grim death claimed its victim and the spirit of a true and noble man left its tenement of clay and winged its way to a land where their is no sorrow and where eternal and everlasting peace comes to all who pass through pearly gates and enter into the kingdom of God.

Mr Estes was sixty-two years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Gwinnett county, GA, and came to Columbus when only sixteen years of age. For a good many years he was in the hardware business, being the junior member of the firm of Estes & Bro, one of the leading business houses in the city. For the past fifteen years he has been in the shoe business, and at the time of his death was a member of the well-known firm of J Marion Estes & Son. He has always taken an active interest in public affairs, and served the city faithfully as an Alderman for a term of years. Mr Estes finally declined re-election as Alderman, because he did not wish to remain longer in politics.

Mr Estes had been a member of the Baptist church since early manhood, and was a prominent member and deacon of the First Baptist church at the time of his death. He was a noble, refined, polished Christian gentleman, holding a high place in the esteem of the people of Columbus and wherever else he was known. Besides being an active church member, Mr Estes has taken great interest in the orphan's home for a number of years, occupying the responsible position of chief advisor of the managers of the institution. Much of the good work accomplished in this direction is due to the untiring and intelligent efforts of Mr Estes, and in his death the orphans' home loses one of its best and most devoted friends.

Mr Estes was a member of the Knights of Honor, and also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

He married Miss Margaret Kirven, a sister of Messrs J Albert and Richard Kirveen, who with four sons, survive him. His sons are Edwin C Estes of Columbus; J D Estes of Atlanta; J C Estes of Chattanooga, and Herman C Estes of Tuscaloosa, all of whom were at his bedside when he breathed his last.

The deeply afflicted family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire city. May the great and merciful God lighten their sorrows and help them to bear up under the heavy blow that has been given them.
