REVOLUTIONARY PENSION APPLICATION OF JOEL RAMSEY Law Order Book 6, page 31 May 5, 1818

Joel Ramsey who resides in the County of Russell in the State of Virginia, wishing to become a pensioner pursuant to t he provisions of and Act of Congress of the United States , passed on the 18th day of March 1818, entitled "An Act t o provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War," personally appeared in Court and declared on oath that he en listed as a private soldier in the 4th Regiment of the North Carolina line, commanded by Col. Thomas Clark and serve d in Captain Goodmans company, he does not recollect the year, but he was in the first detachment that marched to Wilmington he enlisted for three years and served his time faithfully. We went from Wilmington to Philadelphia, from thence to headquarters at Valley Forge, and wintered there. He served frequently as guard to General Washington, he was also at the battles of Mammoth-Brandywine-Germantown and Trenton, and was present when Gen. Washington captured General Howe's horse. Howe himself having taken to his scrapers. An d from the knowledge which some of the members of the Court themselves have as well as from satisfactory evidence, the court are unanimously of opinion and do hereby certify that the said Joel Ramsey is a person of credit as a witness ; that it was generally understood in the neighborhood of t he residence of the said Joel Ramsey previous to the passage of the said Act of Congress that the said Ramsey served i n the Revolutionary War, and that the said Joel Ramsey is i n such reduced circumstances in life as to need assistance from his country for support. For 3 years was a life guard of George Washington, during t he Revolutionary War. He entered the war when he as 17 year s of age. On account of his youth they did not wish to take him, but it was suggested that he be taken as a drummer boy. He was married during to the was. He has told of the Americana running away from the British a Horse Shoe Bend. After the was when he applied for his pension before the courts, a Dutchman was in the court room. Grandfather told of h is of his being at the Battle of Trenton; the Hession sai d "Pe sure dat is drue for I as dar" It was 5 May 1818 when he appeared in court. The last mention of Joel Ramsey in his pension file is not e dated 1 March 1839 from the Department of the Treasury au thorizing a payment of 8 dollars per month from 4 Sept 183 7 to 4 March 1838. However, Joel Ramsey in enumerated as Revolutionary War Pensioner, age 81 in the 1840 Federal Census of Russell County, Virginia.
