VOC PAY ROLL REGISTER FOR HENDRIK STOEDER

The 'Grootboek en journaal, 1773 - 1774' (English: ‘General Ledger and Journal’) of the Ship 'Bredenhof' on which Hendrik Stoeder arrived at the Cape in 1774 in the service of the VOC chamber Hoorn, can be found in the VOC Archives in the National Archives of The Netherlands in Amsterdam. This particular General Ledger contains the ship's pay roll register (scheeps soldijboek) for Hendrik Stoeder.

"While each VOC Chamber had its own personnel administration, they did adhere to centrally determined regulations. The basis of the salary administration is the ship's pay-register, in which was recorded the personalia and salary data from all the paid crew of every VOC ship. The data is noted per employee and the salary account opens on the ship's date of departure. The account closes upon termination of tenure and with the company's final payment of the crewman's or rightful claimants credit." Hendrik Stoeder’s pay roll register is contained in the VOC Archives (archive 1.04.02), inventory number 14495 (Schip Bredenhof Grootboek), folio 234 (pay roll register for Hendrik Stoeder). [Source: http://www.gahetna.nl/collectie/archief/inventaris/index/eadid/1.04...]. A copy of the document can be purchased from the National Archives of The Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The Pay roll register of Hendrik Stoeder reflect his appointment upon departure from the Netherlands on 7 Dec 1773, with the last entry for his annual salary in August 1783. His place of origin is shown as the Canton Zürig and had the rank of ‘Corporaal’.The fact that he already had the rank of Corporal upon joining the service of the VOC chamber Hoorn, means that he had to have served in another army elsewhere in Europe before that time. On the credit side of the ledger it reflects annual entries for his salary for the period 1774 to 1783. His salary entries shows that he had the rak of Sergeant as from 1781.

On the debit side of the General Ledger, it contains payments Hendrik Stoeder had to make to the VOC upon joining for his uniform and other costs, with entries for a number of debenture (schuld briewen) repayments in 1780, 1783 (two entries) and 1784. One of the entries, on 28 Feb 1783, refers to repayment of a debenture in favour of the koopman Albert van Meerbeek.

This is the same debenture referred to in a letter dated, 15 Dec 1781, in which Sergeant Hendrik Stoeder gave authority to his employer, the chamber Hoorn, to make payment of 212 Gulden to Albert van Meerbeek, koopman tot Delft. [source: KAB, CJ 2833, 15.12.1781 (S)].
