About Johann Georg Heinrich Dietz

Birth: 04 FEB 1742 in Hornbach, Germany Burial: Old Goshenhoppen Cemetery, Woxall, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Immigration: 1768 Reference Number: 2630 Event: Note Old Goshenhoppen Cemetery records gives birth date as 21 Dec. 1779 Death: 17 NOV 1812 in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Note:

This is an extract of a letter written by Charles Henry Deetz to his cousin, Ella Deetz Bilger, in February 1932:

"Johann Georg Heinrich Deitz, your first American ancestor of the Dietz branch, was born in Hornbach in the Rhine Palatinate, Germany, Feb. 4, 1742. (Hornbach is a village near Zweibruchen and is now within a mile or two of the French border.) He learned the miller's trade in Zweibruchen, and on a legal document of 1763, is described as of tall stature and brown hair, also as true, industrious, quiet, peaceful and honest. He came to America in 1763 and married Catherine (probably Katrina in those days) Gerhart in 1768. He died Nov 17, 1812, leaving four sons and five daughters. (Your great grandmother, Catherine Gerhart, was a daughter of Peter Gerhart who came to America from Alsace, Germany, in 1737. He raised a family of eleven children. He was born in 1717 and died in 1766. Buried at Indian Creek Reformed Church.) Your great grandfather Dietz, I think, built the mill where Aunt Caroline lived, and if I am not mistaken, she was a 2nd(?) cousin of her husband, Jesse, who was a grandson of the original Dietz. (Deetz's buckwheat, you may remember, had a national reputation and sold at a higher price than any other. Of your grandfather, Abraham Deetz, I only know that he married a Berger and the family lived in Saucon Twp. Lehigh co., and later moved to Bucks, probably near Tylersport. They had thirteen children and were buried at Schlictersville Cemetery." Note: Johann Georg Heinrich Deitz is listed in the Old Goshenhoppen Cemetery as being buried there
