He came to America with his father. He moved to the Valley shortly after marriage, and settled on the land on which he lived and died in the upper end of the Valley. various parts of his farm were called Sweet Land, Peace the Best, Jacob's Last Chance, Sugar Tree Valley, Tired Dog, and Mount Olivet. He was tall and stout in person. He had one eye, as a result of some malicious men, who fell foul of him at Money's Tavern, which, it seems, was a place of justice, and while he defended himself, one man struck him with a stone. Late in life, a cataract made him blind for a year until an operation restored his sight. He was a very strict disciplinarian. During winter evenings, he sat at a table and read, but not a whisper came from the family, each in his usual place. While eating, the children stood around the table. The food was plain and simple. They ate soup for breakfast, no meat, and fruits in season. They ate meat at noon. In the evening, soup and potatoes were served, no meat. Mush and milk was used often, and buttermilk was the drink, except on the Sabbath when they had coffee. (Notes from 1856 Annals, p. 40)

-------------------------------------------------

Jacob who was the third son of the elder Yost Herbach. Dr. Harbaugh, though brought up on his father’s farm, was a student while a plow boy, and it is said a carpenter; from his very childhood he was religiously inclined and by dint of his own rigid application and perseverance he became an eminent scholar and theologian, and the author of several well written books: 1. “Heaven, Or an Earnest Scriptural Inquiry into the Abode of the Sainted Dead.” 2. “The Heavenly Recognition, Or an Earnest and Scriptural Discussion of the Question, “Will We Know our Friends in Heaven?” 3. “The Heavenly Home, Or the Employments and Enjoyments of the Saints in Heaven.” 4. “The Future Life.” (three vols.) 5. “The Birds of the Bible.” 6. “The Fathers of the German Reformed Church in Europe and America.” 7. “Union With the Church, the Solemn Duty and Blessed Privilege of All Who Would be Saved.” Their very titles show the ruling feature and bent of his mind, and that he lived, so to speak, rather in the future than in the present world. There was, however a humorous as well as a pathetic side to his nature. He was a poet, but courted the Muse only too seldom; yet he wrote quite a number of fine pieces in verse, chiefly in the Pennsylvania German (his native dialect) which, since his death, have been collected and published in a neat little volume entitled Harbaugh’s Harfe.
