By at least 1794 his surname was spelled Hickman in property records. During that year he bought several properties in Sullivan Co. through Mary Parker, the executrix of the estate of Anthony Bledsoe. Two excerpts follow.

"Mary Parker...for fifty pounds Virginia money" sold three hundred acres to Peter Hickman.

"Mary Parker doth hereby acknowledge have bargained and sold in fee simple and confirmed unto the said Peter Hickman his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land containing six hundred acres more or less lying and being in the County of Sullivan in the Territory South of the Ohio including his [Bledsoe's] old plantation on the waters of the Steels creek beginning at three white hickories corner to his three hundred acres survey running with the said line South 18 degrees East 163 poles to two Spanish oaks on the side up a high knob at the southwest corner of his field thence along said knob a conditional line to be with David Steel...together with all houses ways waters and all other appurtenances..."

On March 13, 1813, Peter and wife Dorothy made an agreement with his son Michael whereby Peter was to remain on his 750- acre farm and receive food and clothing for the remainder of his life, after which the land would go to Michael. At this time he also gave Michael 224 acres on Steel Creek in Sullivan Co, TN. On March 30 1813 he gave Michael his 100 acres on Steel Creek in Washington Co. VA.
