About Johann Gotlieb Poppe

Johann was born in Hohengrape, Soldin, Prussia which is now known as Chrapowo, Zielona-Gora, Poland. The village of Hohengrape is located about 53 miles northeast of Frankfurt-on-the-Oder. He was a son of Johann Gotlieb and Charlotte (Roloff) Poppe. His father died about 1830 when Gotlieb was 5 years old. The Archives of Old Recordds in Warsaw, Poland could find no record of his birth nor of his father's death. Johann left Prussia in August 1861 and traveled to Canada. In 1864 on September 10th he purchaased from the British crown one-half acre of land in Poole, Perth County, Ontario, Canada. Then on the 26th of July 1865 he purchased another 2 and one-half aacres of land in Poole, bordered by Augusta, Albert, Helena, and Alfred Streets. Next in 1869 he moved to Gray township, Huron county, Ontario, Canada and in 1877 came to the United States coming into the country via Detroit, Michigan. He settled in section 20 of Hixon Township, Clark County, Wiconsin where he owned 53 acres of land which bordered his brother's land. Later selling the land and moving to Reseburg and then settling in Thorp both towns are in Clark County, Wisconsin.

Poppe, Grunwald (1825 - 1914) Surnames: POPPE NEITSEL PFRIMMER SCETTIN NICOLS NICHOLS Source: REPUBLIC (Stanley, Clark County, Wis.) 12/31/1914 Poppe, Grunwald (30 JUN 1825 - 21 DEC 1914) Grunwald Poppe died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Augusta Pfrimmer in this city Monday night, Dec. 21, 1914, aged 89 years, 5 months and 21 days. The deceased was born in Prussia and migrated to the Canadian Provinces in 1861, where he resided for 16 years. He then came to the states and located in Clark County, Wis., where he became a substantial and much respected citisen. He was twice married, first to Ernestina Neitsel who died in 1881. He married again to Louisa Scettin, who departed this life about seven years ago. Mr. Poppe is survived by two sons, Charles G. of this city and Wm. E. of Stanley, and two daughters, Mrs. Pfrimmer of this city and Mrs. Nicols, who resides in Manitoba. The funeral occurred yesterday and the remains were interred in the cemetery at Reseburg near the old home. (Stanley Republican)
