Thomas Frederick Dreyer, a son of T.F. Dreyer of Alphen, bought the farm in 1831, together with over 20 morgen of quitrent land adjoining. In 1837 he sold it all again to his brother-in-law Johannes Albertus Munnik.

A bitter family struggle was obviously continuing beneath the surface of the legal proceedings over 'Alphen' and 'Dreyersdal', and Christina Dreyer, widow of Johannes Albertus Munnik, emerged the victor, but this triumph brought her little joy - she too was declared insolvent and a Sheriff's Sale was scheduled to liquidate the estate. Strangely enough this moment, which must surely be ssen as 'Alphen's' darkest hour, was also the prelude to her greatest success, for in 1854, Dirk Cloete appeared. Wealthy, decisive and powerful, he was exactly the kind of man to set the property back on its feet.
