Johannes Baatjies (1967 - 2016)

Brief overview:

Johannes (40), a Ward Councillor for the Democratic Alliance political party, and his business partner, Shuping Nose, were murdered after being lured to a "meeting" on 17th August 2016. Johannes was dragged behind a vehicle, and shot twice in the head and once in the chest. Shuping was shot while he was still in the vehicle, and rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his wounds a few days later. They were found on the road between Daniëlskuil and Postmasburg.

  • Update 22nd August 2020 - Richard Hasane (36), Richard Magawu (32), former ANC ward candidate, Matthews Legodi (52), Frank Baxane (34) and Charles Mpondomisa (42) were all convicted in May on two charges of murder. They were also convicted of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. In addition to Magawu, who was sentenced to 36 years in prison, the other four killers were sentenced to two life terms for the two murders. Baxane and Mpondomisa were each sentenced to an additional four years in prison for possession of a firearm and ammunition.
