Birth: Oct. 4, 1822, Norway
Death: Feb. 23, 1883 Minnehaha County, South Dakota, USA
Johannes Eriksen Berdal, married in 1848 to Kristi Andersdtatter Henjum, immigrated in 1856 from the Jordal gard at Sjostrand, Leikanger kommune. Kristi was born on the Henjum gard at Sjostrand. The Johannes Berdal family consisted of their four children, Anders, Erick, Anfin, and Kristi who had all been born at Jordal. Also in their company were Johannes Berdal's 2 sisters, Trine and Anna Berdal. After reaching New York, they continued on to Winneshiek Co., Iowa, and located in the northern part of the Big Canoe Norwegian settlement north of Decorah. They lived there for 4 years and worked for local farmers. Daughter Martha Berdahl, was born in the Big Canoe settlement.
The Berdals came to Black Hammer in 1860. By this time most of the farm land in Black Hammer had been taken by earlier settlers and land speculators who held several farms. Available was school land adjoining to the south of what is now the Shorty Bauer farm. Sons Ole, Herman, and Johan were born in Black Hammer.
In 1866 Johannes and Kristi moved to Amherst township in Fillmore Co. and bought a farm consisting of 160 acres. Christopher was born in Amherst. Here in Amherst the growing family was content until they left to homestead in Dakota Territory in 1873. The oldest son Anders J. Berdahl who would be known as "Andrew," was educated as a school teacher and served many years as a teacher in Black Hammer. He also taught in 1871 at North Prairie, Arendahl township in Fillmore County.
A growing family required more land so in 1872 Johannes and two sons, Andrew and Erick, filed for homestead land in Dakota Territory recently formed in 1861. The spring of 1873 a group of relatives and neighbors in 11 covered wagons left Fillmore County for Dakota Territory. In the party were Johannes and Kristi and their 7 sons and 2 daughters. At the time, only one of the sons was married - Erick to Hannah Branvold. The group entered the Slip Up Creek Valley located ten miles northeast of Sioux Falls in Minnehaha county and settled on the claims filed for earlier in what would later be rural Baltic in Edison township. Johannes and Kristi had all their children in the same neighborhood with them. The first dwellings were sod houses.
