About Johannes Hans Bumgardner, I
John was one of the early settlers east of the Massanutten Mountains, and he most likely settled on the Stover tract. He came to this country from Basel, Switzerland when he was twenty years old. He arrived in Philadelphia on August 11, 1732 aboard the ship "Samuel" and was registered as one of those from the German Palatinate Provinces. We are not sure of the exact date of his arrival in the Shenandoah Valley. He received a patent for 400 acres of land in 1746. Records describe his a lining land on "Stoney Lick Branch, opposite the Great Island on Shannandore", and on the "head spring of Honey Lick Branch". He evidently live in the present county of Rockingham somewhere between Port Republic and Elkton. His will is date March 22, 1751, was filed in Augusta County, VA. it reads "sons to be put to school until they can read and write, and the to trades".
Arrived on Ship Samuel 11 Aug. 1732, in Philadelphia. from Basel Switzerland, left from Rotterdam. signed his oath of allegiance with his mark X. He was 20 years old, brother Johann Michael age 21 was listed.
