As a child he lost an eye when he slipped and fell, holding a pair of scissors --see photo with Veronica.
John and Veronica arrived in St. Mary's, Ohio where he bought a two story brick house, with a loan from the bank, on West Monroe St. at the west end of the business district on New Bremen and set up a small shop on the ground floor, where he sold inexpensive jewelry and repaired watches "for three generations of villagers".
