About Johannes Jurie Pistorius
Jurie was born and deaf and blind and therefore could not speak. His mother contracted smallpox during pregnancy. He was a wonderful boy and when we were children we played with him like with any other child.
The one storey about Jurie that I will never forget, is the night he discovered the shoe polish. Because of his condition his sense of smelling was extremely advanced, he could smell anything that had a sharp smell. He also did not have day and nights because of his condition.
The one night he discovered a tin of black polish, opened it and smelled it and also touched it. During the night he always went to his parent's room to feel whether they were still there and had the habit of touching my uncle's face. So this night was no exception with the polish on his hand. Needless to say that when his father woke up the next morning he got a big fright when he looked into the mirror.
His life expectency was short but Jurie surprised all and lived into his thirties. All this time his parents and Isabel and Andre took well care of him and we all still admire them for all the lovely years they gave to Jurie.
