About Johann Valentin Landt / Launt, Sr

The name LANT or LANDT (the old Dutch spelling) means just what it sounds like, land. There are some who believe that the name is a derivative of the name Van Cortland. However, Landt is a known Dutch family name, with a place in Holland that bears this name. The Lant's were part of the early Palantine mass migration to the Colony of New York in 1710. The Palatines were High Dutch, the natives of the so-called Palatinate of Germany which they call the Pfalz, in the Rhine Valley on both sides of the river. The borders differ today. Heidelburg was the old Capital. They were joined by other German emigrants and a few Hugenots and known collectively as Palatines. Most of them had become Protestant Calvinists, like the Hugenots, about 1550. They were industrious, and religious, representing a cross-section of winegrowers, farmers, students, carpenters and other trades. Their main Churches were Reformed and Lutheran. In 1709 they fled Germany by the thousands. Devastation of their cities and farms by Louis XIV of France, in his repeated attacks upon their borders and beyond, plus religious troubles, caused this spectacular exodus from their once rich homeland. They were aided by Queen Anne of England. Anna Catherina (Schnieder) Landt, Christina, 15, Anna, 13, Johann Valentin, 11 and Anna Margaretha, 9 arrived July 1, 1710 on the ship Fame. It is believed Hans Velton Simon (father) died on the voyage from London to New York City. They appeared in Claverack where they obtained leases to farms in the Van Rennselaer Grant in the first half of the 18th century.

Johann Valentin Landt immigrated from Germany via Nutten Island (Governor's Island), King Co., NY on June 14, 1710.

This reconstructed passenger list is based on the first part (75 names) of the July 1, 1710 subsistence list along with any who appear to have been part of their households. Johann Adolph Arthopoeus, a passenger listed below, was the listmaster on the ship Fame which arrived June 14, 1710 indicating most of these passengers were probably on that ship.
