About Johannes Paulus Eksteen Versfeld
Johannes also known as John left Groene Kloof at the age of 24 to manage a farm in the Caledon district. This is where he met Mary Metcalfe, fell in love and married her. According to the a story, John was a dashing young man with auburn hair and Mary could not resist him. Five years into their marriage John buys the farm Langeberg on top of the Piketberg mountain. According to a story about him, he was responsible in building the old Piketberg pass. It was meant to give him a quicker route from his mountain top farm to the village of Piketberg. He and 14 or 16 labourers built the road in 3 months. It came to be known as Versfeld pass.
