Zorn JOHANNES. - Kempten. Son of Christian Z., director of the Orphanage at Kempten. Captain in the Regt. Meuron, b. 1793. Landdrost of the Cape District 1809-14. (See Latrobe's enthusiastic description of his residence “Leeuwenhof” in “Journal of a Visit to South Africa,” 2nd Edition, p. 51.) ~ 22.5.1791 Catharina Christina Scheller, wid. of the lieutenant-engineer Pieter Cloete. + 1825. (C 103, p. 85; Test. O.C. 95: 78; Proclamations of the Government of the Cape of Good Hope under 26.8.1814.) Zorn was a wealthy man. In 1805 he had 33 man slaves and 6 slave girls and 35,000 vines on his estate, “Leeuwenhof “. He was a keen member of the Commission for Cattle-breeding and Agriculture and in 1808 was entrusted with the task of distributing merinoes among the farmers of the Cold and Warm Bokkeveld He was the first landdrost of the Cape District and Sir John Cradock called him “a very meritorious magistrate”" and entertained “the best opinion of his loyalty”.
