Brief overview:
Roelof (46), was shot dead on his smallholding at Vaalbank outside Bronkhorstspruit in front of his wife, Laura, (45), by black attackers. He was shot six times through the throat, lungs and abdomen while lying in his bed. Roelof heard noises outside his window and ran outside to find his 19-year-old son with a gun held against head, by a gang of five armed black attackers. Father and son were ordered to lie on the ground. Hearing voices outside, Laura, came out of her bedroom to investigate. Her son, Riaan, managed to escape when the attackers were distracted. The attackers ran off leaving empty bullet cartridges littering the yard. Laura said that despite being severely wounded, Roelof managed to speak, "He said 'please go and fetch the car and take me to hospital'. “He said he was cold, so I got him blankets. Then he said he couldn’t breathe, so I tried CPR until the police arrived. “He died in my arms for no reason… they didn’t take a single thing,” she said. Laura added that the police arrived on the scene straight away, along with a forensics team. Du Plessis had a successful company called Rubicon X-ray services, which serviced and installed Phillips X-ray machines all over the country. The family have lived on the farm since 2006 and have never had any attacks before.
Roelof du Plessis (51), 26 June 2013: Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng: his wife Laura and their 19-year-old Son were attacked on their smallholding by a gang of Black men. They gained entry to the Son’s bedroom and started assaulting him. His parents woke from the commotion and found him in the living room where he was being assaulted. The attackers shot Roelof several times and fled. He died on the scene.
