Obituary - Ashland Daily Independent, Monday, March 24, 1930
Paintsville, KY, March 24—John Meade, 71, was struck and instantly killed at the mouth of Tom; Creek, five miles from here on the Mayo Trail, Sunday morning by an automobile driven by Burns VanHoose, who was accompanied by Hoy and Nathan VanHoose. The men speeded on after killing Mr. Meade, it is said, and were later arrested. They are at liberty today under heavy bond. Burns VanHoose is under $5,000 bond and Coy and Nathan VanHoose are under $2,500 bond. Mrs. John Dills, who say she was a witness to the accident, said that after hitting Mr. Meade the men increased their speed. A few minutes later a man who is said to have been a West Virginia state policeman, came along and gave chase to the fleeing men and overtook them just before they entered the city limits here. In the car was found a piece of Mr. Meade’s skull, it is said and portions of his brains where scattered over the windshield and front part of the automobile.
